Game of School responses:
The student's role in school success is to not to just do the bare minimum when asked to complete a task. Students should do equipped reading or step,by completing work without looking to a peer or parent for the answers. In adulthood, no one will be there with the answers for every scenario one faces in life. The students will at some point have to make educated decisions about their futures and must have a strong foundation in the K through 12 required curriculum to be able to proficiently navigate the adult world of work and higher education.
1. Key indicators that the GOS is being played is when teachers and students are ordered to give up home room or morning prep time to do standardized test sample problem drills because the principal is unhappy with last year's scores. I think it's a very bad idea to take up classroom learning time with test preparation drills. Another GOS being played indicator is when a learning challenged child is allowed to participate in regressive antisocial behavior or do whatever he or she would like to do because it is easier than getting the child to participate in the lesson along with his or her classmates. Lat but not least are the many times that I've seen teachers interrupted in the middle of a lesson by an out of control student who needs attention but due to lack of district funding the student and teacher are at a loss because there are not enough support staff to help the child or teacher. For example the school social worker or counselor is unavailable due to an IEP meeting in session or the teaching assistant normally assigned to a class full time must cover three classes during a single school day Instead of one. What do you do if more than one learning challenged children has a meltdown?
3. As a graduate student I will work to help eliminate the obstacles to learning and teaching that were mentioned in the excerpt such as to learn different teaching and organizational strategies to help minimize or eliminate the negative impacts of the GOS being played in the educational arena.
4. The role that the Game of School plays in school improvement ventures is the constant battle for the funding needed to make significant improvement in the school learning environment or in terms of assisting teachers to acquire meaningful and effective professional training opportunities. Also, I think it's important to increase community involvement so that the community as a whole feels responsible for the success of its schools, school staff, and area students. The public should see just how hard the teachers are working for their town or city's children. In turn. Hopefully members of the public will enthusiastically support compensation and training of our teachers. There has to be a human element along with the political funding one or very little progress can be made to gain public support for essential school funding, capital improvements, student learning tools, and support staff. Schools have to remain the epicenter of our communities through various community outreach events whether it's wellness fairs, sports, or workshops for parents And children. We have to do more to get families back into the schools as participants in the success of Their students and our schools in general. The school belongs to the entire community and should be regarded as a source of pride and a resource by all community members.
2.I've experienced the game of school being played firsthand when in 7th grade algebra I was told that I lacked the aptitude to be in the accelerated math class my teacher explained, "It doesn't matter how many ways I try to teach the algebra, you just "don't get it." Cavalierly, but he had no idea how much his words would haunt me in regard to mathematics. I was placed in an average learner class where I quickly became the best in my class but was not being challenged. It wasn't until 10th grade that my math teacher undid the damage caused by my 7th grade teacher when she had me stay afterschool during the school year making sure that I grasped the information and could work independly. What a concept! Now I realize that my 7th grade teacher didn't want a student in class who required more time than the other students and might get a less than perfect grade from time to time, to make him look bad. Because he lacked patience for different learning styles I was labeled as an average learner when I was far from average, just needed more time having processes explained than he was willing to give.
